Sagar University was established on 18 July 1946 by famous scholar Dr. Harisingh Gaur. In 1983 the University was renamed as Dr.Harisingh Gaur University. For this University Dr. Harisingh Gaur gave all his property. As a establisher and Vice Chancellor he worked for the development of the University. This university is 5 Km away from the city and situated on beautiful hills of Patheria spread along 830.30 hectares. Colony for staff and Professor is also in premises of the University. It is the largest and oldest University in the State. About 68 Colleges are affiliated to it and number of department is 36.

State Bank and Post office is in premises only to facilitate students. Transportation facility us available for girls for going to city area.

There are three branches of NCC running in University.

1. 11 MP Batallion NCC

2. 3  MP Signal Company

3. 7  MP Girls Batallion NCC

Two Units of NSS are also working. It teaches the student about Social Work.

Beside this there is good library facility. Central library was established in 1946 and it was named as 'Jawaharlal Nehru Library'. Beside this departmental libraries are also there which are located in respective departments. There are more the three lakhs books and periodicals available with this library.

There are five hostels available in the University, namely Taigore, Vivekanand, Raman, Bhabha & Nivedita. Nivedita is the girls hostel and there is a provision for 250 girls in the hostel. Bhabha hostel is available for research students.
